An investigation into the road infrastructure crisis that is costing Quebecers dearly.

Télé-Québec presents Pothole (Nid-de-poule), a documentary produced by Avanti-Toast and directed by Paul-Maxime Corbin, in which actress and concerned citizen Eve Duranceau investigates the worrying state of Quebec’s roads. Available as a digital premiere starting October 6 on the Télé-Québec website and app, and airing October 20 at 8 p.m.

Coming from a family that has worked in the public works sector, Eve tackles a subject that is deeply important to her. Inspired by the documentary theater approach, at the invitation of the Porte Parole company, she begins her investigation as an ordinary citizen seeking to understand why roads across Quebec are in such a pitiful state and, more importantly, why nothing is being done.

A Costly and Controversial System
Despite the colossal sums invested each year in the road network, motorists still have to deal with potholes and cracked pavement, while neighboring regions like Ontario and Vermont appear to be in better condition. The documentary raises essential questions: the efficiency of public fund management, the shared responsibilities between elected officials, government departments, and field workers, the influence of electoralism and a lack of transparency, as well as our collective relationship with public goods and our resignation in the face of a chronic problem.

A Field Investigation
Throughout her investigation, Eve meets a diverse group of stakeholders: victims of damage and accidents caused by poor road conditions, elected officials, civil servants, engineers, economists, and other key witnesses to the system. Her exploration also includes the Auditor General’s harsh findings on the road maintenance deficit. Finally, Pothole invites Quebecers to take stock of the asset maintenance deficit of our road infrastructure because if we don’t stop the bleeding, we will soon have to collectively make heartbreaking choices.
